Hollywood Feed University Presents Online Course Entitled “Safe and Sound: Promoting Positive Canine Interactions & Safety”

Hollywood Feed recently hosted a free virtual class, entitled “Safe and Sound: Promoting Positive Canine Interactions & Safety” taught by Lee PhelanCPDT-KA, PMCT, an experienced Animal Behavior Specialist from the Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County. This course was part of Hollywood Feed’s free pet wellness education resource known as Hollywood Feed University.

In this presentation, Phelan shared basic concepts about introducing dogs to each other safely and interpreting canine body language during dog-to-dog interactions. He taught that you need two people for dog introductions and the handlers need to be calm. You should consider the size of the dogs and their play style before introductions. Once the dogs meet, let them get nose to nose and then go nose to tail. Once they are comfortable with each other, let them off leash and back out of the situation and let them play. Some tools to prevent fights include water, treats and an air horn. Overall, Phelan's advice centered on understanding and respecting each dog's boundaries, ensuring a safe and positive experience for both pets and their owners.

During the course, he held a live, interactive Q&A session with attendees and addressed the questions asked by viewers.
