Hollywood Feed University Hosts Online Course on Pet Emergencies

Hollywood Feed recently hosted a free virtual class, entitled "Pet Emergencies: How to Respond Quickly to Save Your Pet’s Life," taught by veterinary technician Amy D’Andrea. The course was part of Hollywood Feed’s free, pet wellness education resource known as Hollywood Feed University. This particular seminar focused on knowing how to react to a pet emergency before getting to a vet clinic. A recording of the class may be viewed on Hollywood Feed’s website at https://hfu.hollywoodfeed.com/live-presentations/pet-emergencies/.

Amy began by telling the class that many pet emergencies can easily be prevented by keeping dangerous items out of reach, obeying leash laws, proper training, and pet-proofing homes.

Throughout the course, Amy touched on a variety of common emergencies among pets. She also gave advice on safe practices to use when transporting a pet experiencing an emergency and recommended that everyone purchase a pet first aid kit that is regularly restocked. Amy went over how to identify and react when a pet is choking, poisoned, bleeding excessively, burned and/or and experiencing an allergic reaction or hypo/hyperthermia. She also showed a step-by-step video of how a pet owner can perform the Heimlich maneuver on his/her pet.

Lastly, Amy noted that it is essential for all pet owners to keep a pet first aid kit in their homes and with their pets at all times. She finished by emphasizing that, with proper tools and training, all pet emergencies can be either fully or partially taken care of by the owner.

After the presentation, Amy held a live, interactive Q&A session with attendees and posted several polls to gage the habits and most prominent emergencies pet owners had experienced and then went into more detail on how to handle the most popular emergencies.
