Memphis-based General Contractor RKA Construction, LLC (RKA) reported record growth, the addition of several new full-time team members, and multiple new and repeat clients in the commercial market sector, as well as expanding into the Oxford, MS market. This growth is particularly meaningful considering that RKA only recently launched its commercial division and named Patrick Johnston as its Executive Vice President in fall of 2022.

“The remainder of 2022 and 2023 were spent establishing a strong foundation, bringing in additional team members, and taking on new project opportunities as we scaled up the RKA Commercial Services division,” says Johnston. “Our team of professionals is on track for new growth and additional opportunities in 2024 and beyond.”

In 2023, RKA added seven new full-time team members, served 13 new clients, and led 22 active or completed projects.

RKA intentionally entered the commercial construction market sector with the goal of challenging typical construction perceptions.

“Quality craftsmanship isn’t just for high-end homes, it’s for workplaces of all types, shapes and sizes,” says Johnston. “Done correctly, commercial designs can enhance workflow, improve interactions, increase productivity and enhance morale.” Recognizing that the relationships between clients, design professionals, and contractors are crucial to project outcomes, he goes on to note, “We aim to ‘build success’ for our clients while practicing our core values: We are craftsmen; We build relationships; We honor our commitments; We are transparent; We are friendly. Our goal is to provide the best overall experience for each of our clients.”

In the past year alone, RKA’s Commercial Services division has handled projects for medical offices, hospitals, educational facilities, industrial facilities, corporate offices, civic and government buildings, retail establishments, restaurants, logistics and transportation facilities, and outdoor parks.

“There are no cookie cutters here,” says Johnston. “We serve a diverse range of clients and end-users so the definition of success for each one is unique – and we listen to determine and achieve what project success means for them.”

One notable project in which RKA Commercial Services was involved in during 2023 was the Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change at the University of Memphis, a renovation managed by RKA and A2H. This state-of-the-art facility was recently named a finalist for the 2024 Building Memphis Awards by the Memphis Business Journal. What was especially significant about this project was the opportunity to involve University of Memphis students including members of the Hooks Institute’s student success programs and Herff College of Engineering students.

“Through this student module, we involved students in every part of the construction process from reviewing plans and learning about the permitting process to doing regular walk-throughs of the renovation progress and learning about overall design, as well as construction project management,” says Johnston. “We’re always looking for unique ways to partner with our clients – and this was a win-win for all involved because, with any luck, some of these talented students may join the industry or even the RKA team one day!”

Currently, RKA remains focused on continuing to build its repeat business and new client base throughout the tri-state area, with a continued focus on both the residential and commercial market sectors. While based in Memphis, TN, the firm recently opened an office in Oxford, MS with several staff members dedicated to management in Oxford and the surrounding areas.

“Demand continues to grow across the Mid-South region,” says Johnston. “Since RKA’s niche has always been to provide the best client experience, we continue to bring detailed craftsmanship, superior customer service and elevated aesthetics to each of our projects.”
