Memphis, Tenn., (Jan 20, 2021) - Junior Achievement of Memphis and the Mid-South today announced it received a $15,000 grant from Truist Foundation to support its JA BizTown and JA Inspire programs.
“We are humbled and encouraged by this generous gift from Truist Foundation,” says Leigh Mansberg, president and CEO of Junior Achievement of Memphis and the Mid-South. “With their support, it is our goal to teach students valuable skills to help them become world-ready, engaged business and community leaders.”
The JA BizTown program consists of a multi-week classroom curriculum culminating in fourth through sixth-grade students running a model city for a day. While participating in JA BizTown, students hold jobs, get a paycheck, manage budgets, vote, and participate as productive citizens, business leaders and community members. JA BizTown helps students connect the dots between what they learn in school and the real world. Through the experiential learning process, students are actively engaged in posing questions, investigating, expressing curiosity, solving problems and assuming responsibility. This program currently leverages virtual simulations to offer JA BizTown curriculum in a safe and vibrant learning atmosphere for participating students and their teachers.
JA Inspire gives middle school students a creative look at a various job options through a combination of classroom learning and robust, interactive job exploration. This program brings together the business community and local schools to help launch middle school students into high school, college, and careers beyond. With the help of community partners, such as Truist Foundation, JA plans to grow JA Inspire exponentially over the next year. In May of 2021, JA will virtually host hundreds of eighth graders from Shelby County Schools’ College, Career and Technical Education program, along with hundreds of students from charter and independent school partners for the nonprofit’s inaugural JA Inspire event. JA Inspire is being offered virtually to safely support the needs of local educators and their participating sixth through eighth-grade students.
“We’re proud to support Junior Achievement of Memphis and the Mid-South with this contribution,” says Johnny Moore, Mid-West Tennessee regional president at Truist, on behalf of the Truist Foundation. “Teaching children finance, career readiness and life skills creates a positive ripple effect on the family unit. Partnering with Junior Achievement to provide these valuable learning experiences to local students fulfills our purpose to inspire and build better lives and communities.”
