Hollywood Feed University Hosts Online Course on Puppy Training

Hollywood Feed recently hosted a free virtual class, entitled Puppy Training, taught by Amy Lear, CPDT-KA, ABCDT, ABCCT. The course was part of Hollywood Feed’s free, pet wellness education resource known as Hollywood Feed University. This particular seminar focused on the importance of training in the first few months of a puppy's life. A recording of the class may be viewed on Hollywood Feed University's website at

Throughout the course, Lear focused on puppy obedience. She emphasized using positive reinforcement for potty training, crate training and leash walking.

Lear began by teaching attendees that when a pet owner gets a new pet product, such as a bed, toy or kennel, it is vital to keep a close eye on the pet when interacting with the item to make sure it is safe and effective for that specific pet.

Lear also concentrated on sticking to routine when training a puppy. She focused on the importance of making a kennel a positive place for the puppy. This can be done by giving a puppy a treat when in the kennel.

For dogs who pull during a walk, Lear suggested that pet owners try using a harness. Harnesses help owners stop their dogs when they are pulling. She showed her dog, Thor, wearing a front-clip harness during class and how she has more control when the dog is wearing a harness.

Throughout the presentation, Lear held an interactive Q&A session with attendees and posted several polls to gage the knowledge and most prominent behavioral issues of pet owners' puppies. She ended by stressing that in order to ensure a dog is well behaved, owners must train their puppies by teaching good behavior using positive reinforcement from an early age.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Amy Lear began her journey in animal rescue at the age of 6 by volunteering for PALS – Protectors of Animal Life Society in East Winthrop, Maine. From an early age she knew she wanted to work with animals, so becoming a dog trainer was an easy choice.

Lear graduated from The University of Memphis in 1996 and worked in the corporate world for years while continuing dog and cat rescue in her spare time. In 2009, she decided to follow her dream and enrolled in The Animal Behavior College Certified Dog Trainer Program. She obtained her ABC Dog Trainer certification in 2010 and started her dog training as a side job. It was a hobby at first, but grew rapidly.

Lear became a nationally recognized Certified Professional Dog Trainer in 2013, which allowed her to add CPDT-KA to her certifications. In 2013, she decided to leave the corporate world and become a full-time dog trainer. She opened her company PALS Dog Training, LLC. She also obtained her Cat Trainer certification in 2017 from The Animal Behavior College.

Lear continues to work with rescue groups and shelters to this day. She has worked with thousands of dogs, all breeds and all ages. During normal operation, PALS Dog Training, LLC offers group classes and training at The Pet Hospitals. She also offers private training at individuals’ homes. Lear is a behavior specialist and uses only force-free positive methods.
