Memphis, Tenn. (November 6, 2019) – Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics will honor retired orthopaedic surgeon and former Chief of Staff S. Terry Canale, MD, and the Canale family by naming a portion of the new facility, nearing completion in Germantown, in their honor. The “S. Terry Canale Family Performance and Wellness Center” at Campbell Clinic will house the state-of-the-art Accel Performance and Wellness program in the 11,000 square-foot training and rehabilitation facility scheduled to open later this year. Dr. Canale presently serves as the President of the Campbell Foundation, the charitable trust for the physicians of Campbell Clinic, and he has been a longtime supporter of the mission of the Foundation, which is to improve the quality of life for all through the science of orthopaedic medicine.

“Dr. Canale has been a tremendous orthopaedic surgeon, a visionary leader in orthopaedics, for both Campbell Clinic and the profession at-large, and someone I’m proud to call one of my mentors,” said Dr. Frederick M. Azar, Chief-of-Staff of Campbell Clinic. “As we look to the opening of this new facility representing the future of orthopaedics in the Mid-South, we find it quite fitting to honor Dr. Canale and his family in this way. His lifelong support and leadership will ensure that progress in orthopaedic research and surgeon education will continue for years to come.”

Dr. Canale, who specialized in pediatric orthopaedics and sports medicine throughout his career, joined Campbell Clinic in 1974 and served there for more than 40 years, treating thousands of patients. Orthopaedic research and surgeon education have been hallmarks of his career, and he has contributed significantly to the orthopaedic literature in both journals and textbooks, serving as co-editor for five editions of Campbell’s Operative Orthopaedics, the #1 selling textbook on orthopaedic surgery in the world. His interest in research and education led him to leadership positions for local and national orthopaedic research organizations, and he was instrumental in the development of the basic science research arm of the UT-Campbell Clinic Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Tennessee. Throughout his career, he was active in a number of local, regional, and national specialty organizations, including the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA), the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), Orthopaedics Overseas (now Health Volunteers Overseas), and the Pediatric Orthopaedic  Society of North America (POSNA), serving as president for the latter three organizations. Dr. Canale serves or has served with numerous local civic organizations, including St. Peters Orphanage, University Club of  Memphis, Synergy Foundation Board of Directors, Shelby County Drug Court, and the Greater Memphis Arts Counsel.  He has garnered many local honors as well, including Outstanding Alumni Award for CBHS and University of Virginia and Methodist Healthcare’s Living Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2011.

“My family and I are excited about the ongoing important work of the Campbell Foundation,” said Dr. Canale. “Also, I’m a big believer in keeping active, and am excited to see the possibilities in this wonderful new Performance and Wellness Center at Campbell Clinic. We hope others will be inspired to get and stay active and ‘at the top of their game.’”

Outside his professional life, Dr. Canale is an accomplished artist; his works have been displayed both locally and nationally.  He and his wife, Sissie, have two children (Haines Loden, and Robb Canale) and five grandchildren.
