Campbell Clinic First and Only in Memphis to Perform Outpatient Kinematic Total Knee Replacement

(Memphis, TN) - Campbell Clinic's Dr. Marcus Ford is the first and only orthopaedic surgeon in the Mid-South region offering kinematic knee replacements. This procedure reproduces the patient’s alignment and ligament tensioning that was present prior to developing knee arthritis. This method, which is customized to each patient and avoids ligament releases, speeds the recovery process and provides for enhanced pain relief, balance, mobility, joint functionality and motion.

"Historically, traditional knee replacement involves positioning implants at a pre-determined alignment regardless of patient anatomy.  Surgeons then do large ligament releases to accommodate the implant position. However, there is extreme variability in knee alignment and ligament tensioning between patients. Much like people themselves, no two knees are exactly alike," says Dr. Marcus Ford. "With kinematic alignment, we individualize the implant position to the patient’s anatomy, thus avoiding ligament releases. This allows for faster recovery, a potentially more normal feeling knee, and a knee with improved performance and motion.  15% of patients have historically been dissatisfied with their knee replacement, which to me is unacceptable.  I feel kinematic alignment is the next big step in improving outcomes with knee replacement.”

Since he began performing kinematic knee replacements, Dr. Ford has noted that patients report better overall satisfaction, range of motion, and a much faster recovery following surgery. By putting the knee in its natural position, this procedure helps to restore functionality and provides the patient with a more natural feeling knee.

This technique is new to the Mid-South and is only being performed by Dr. Ford.

Dr. Ford is a graduate of the University of Kansas. He went on to attend medical school at the University of Texas in San Antonio where he graduated as valedictorian. He then completed orthopaedic surgery training at Campbell Clinic followed by a joint reconstruction fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Ford plays an active role in education and research at Campbell Clinic. He teaches orthopaedic residents and fellows, serves as faculty for surgeon training around the country, participates in clinical research projects, and serves as a consultant for various hip and knee projects.  He performs a large volume of primary and complex hip and knee replacement procedures in the Mid-South.
