VICTORY VERTICAL PROJECT VISITS TREZEVANT FOR VETERANS DAY

(Memphis, TN) – On November 10 and 11, Steinway pianist Garik Pedersen visited Trezevant as part of the senior living community’s Veterans Day programming. Garik tours the country presenting to a variety of audiences about the Victory Vertical Project.

The Victory Vertical Project was Steinway’s contribution to the war effort. When the U.S. entered the war, Steinway designed lightweight pianos that were shipped into battle so that music could be used to heighten morale among the troops. Victory Vertical pianos were 40-inch box-shaped instruments that contained a maximum of 33 pounds of metal and came equipped with handles to make transportation easy from site to site. Production ended in the early 1950’s and, by the end of the effort, 2,436 Victory Vertical pianos had been sent to soldiers on three continents, providing much-needed enjoyment and relaxation to those serving in the military.

In addition to Garik’s presentation about the Victory Vertical Project, he performed tunes by Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman,  Sergei Rachmaninoff, Glenn Miller, and many others.

Pedersen has performed as soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States and in Europe, Canada, Central America, Taiwan and the Philippines. He has presented programs for the U.S. State Department, the National Federation of Music Clubs, Music Teachers National Association, the European Piano Teachers Association, Canadian Federation of Music Teachers Associations, the Royal Conservatory of Music, and on numerous public television and radio broadcasts. Currently a Professor of Piano at Eastern Michigan University, Dr. Pedersen has taught undergraduate and graduate students from many U.S. states and 17 other countries, producing prize winners in national, international, regional and state competitions.

Nearly 100 residents, friends and family members enjoyed his presentation and performance at Trezevant on November 10. He also performed songs at the senior living community’s Veterans Day luncheon on November 11.
