Trezevant Unveils Mural Created with Hutchison Students on Memory Support Floor

Trezevant and Hutchison School recently partnered to create a new dining mural with guidance from teaching artist, Kristi Duckworth. The unveiling with Trezevant residents and staff and students and teachers from Hutchison took place at the Trezevant Terrace 3rd Floor (memory support floor) on June 24. This project began with Margaret Morton, formerly of Trezevant staff, and Kristi Duckworth, a visual artist, first partnering to start this mural in early August 2019. From there, the "She Leads Club" at Hutchison conducted interviews with residents at Trezevant about life in Memphis from 1930 to 1960s. Hutchison students were able to pull together common themes from these interviews including rural roots in the tri-state region; moving to Memphis; the elegance of transportation in form of trolleys, boats and horses; the outdoor beauty of Memphis with trees, gardens and parks; and amusements at iconic Memphis locations like The Memphis Zoo, the Mid-South Fair and the Mississippi River. The students researched Memphis history during these time periods and also selected fifty black-and-white images of Memphis from the collection to use as conversation starters with residents of Trezevant. The mural was designed based on themes from such interviews.

The mural features sections denoting the four seasons with a tree representing each season along the Memphis skyline with iconic buildings and landmarks that were mentioned in resident interviews. In April 2021, the mural was installed in the Trezevant Terrace assisted living memory support floor dining room. The mural includes mosaic riverboats and tiles made by Hutchison girls, paintings by Kristi Duckworth and Hutchison students, and handmade leaf paintings by Trezevant residents. The mural installation is three-dimensional, which is optimal for engaging residents.

“We are so honored to have this mural depicting important aspects of life in Memphis, as told by our residents,” said Stacey Sears, director of the Trezevant Foundation. “Kristi Duckworth and the Hutchison girls have created a beautiful and lasting mural that will bring peace and joy to our memory support residents and their families for years to come.”
