Saint Francis Hospital - Memphis at Forefront in Tennessee with Robotic Technology for Spine Surgery

(Memphis, Tenn. – March 9, 2017) Saint Francis Hospital-Memphis hit a milestone this week by completing 300 minimally invasive spine surgeries using Mazor Robotics Renaissance™ Guidance System. Saint Francis Hospital-Memphis was the first hospital in Tennessee to offer the Mazor Robotic spine procedures starting in July 2013 and remains the only hospital in Tennessee with this technology.
Mazor Robotics’ Renaissance™ guidance system has been used to perform thousands of procedures for a wide variety of spinal conditions, including scoliosis degenerative disc disease, herniated disc, and other complex spinal deformity cases. Mazor is an innovative technology that allows surgeons to perform highly-accurate, state-of-the-art guided spinal surgery procedures that can improve patient outcomes and speed recovery.

Before entering the operating room, surgeons use the Renaissance™ to pre-plan the optimal surgery in a CT-based 3-D simulation of the patient’s spine. During surgery, Renaissance™ guides the surgeon’s hand and the tools to the precise pre-planned location.
"The robotic software allows me to map out my patients' procedures before stepping into the operating room. I then use the robot to execute the operative plan with high levels of accuracy while reducing radiation exposure to everyone in the operating room,” says Samuel Schroerlucke, M.D., Orthopedic Surgeon at Tabor Orthopedics and Saint Francis Hospital-Memphis. “I have treated degenerative lumbar conditions, scoliosis, and sacroiliac joint pain with the robot. Dr. Schroerlucke performed the first successful robotic case in the state of Tennessee on September 9, 2013. Since then, he has completed 217 spine surgeries with Mazor robotic technology.
