Memphis Cellulose Celebrates 100th Anniversary
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland Make Proclamations To Honor Company Milestone
MEMPHIS, October 1, 2019 – Memphis Cellulose today celebrated its 100th anniversary as retirees and employees gathered at the United Way Plaza, formerly headquarters for Buckeye Technologies, acquired by Georgia-Pacific in August 2013 and donated to the United Way in March 2015.  Joining Tommy Blaylock, Memphis Cellulose general manager, and Susan Crenshaw, GP Cellulose Technology & Innovation Center Sr. R&D Director, and Munir Abdallah, president of GP Cellulose; Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland attended the historic event to present an official proclamation declaring “Georgia-Pacific Memphis Cellulose Day” in the city of Memphis. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee also signed a proclamation designating a day of recognition to honor the 100th Anniversary of GP Cellulose – Memphis Operations.
“As we celebrate more than 100 years of having a sustained commercial presence in north Memphis, we are honored to have people among us who have served the company as retirees of Procter & Gamble, Buckeye Technologies, or Georgia-Pacific.,” said Blaylock. “Throughout our transformative history, we are proud to have built a strong legacy that current employees can build upon to further advance our efforts to create virtuous cycles of mutual benefit that will help us remain viable and productive far into the future. And, we especially want to thank Governor Bill Lee and Mayor Jim Strickland for honoring our centennial celebration with special acknowledgments.”
Among the events taking place, retirees were able to interact with current employees to learn how work has evolved through the years and opportunity to tour the former Buckeye Technologies headquarters building to see how the United Way of the Mid-South is using the facility to enhance their work to improve the quality of life for mid-southerners by mobilizing and aligning community resources to address priority issues and facilitate economic mobility.
“It is exciting to see how our talented employees in Memphis celebrate their rich history while looking forward and innovating to ensure we continue to be a preferred partner for our customers in the future,” said Munir Abdallah, president – GP Cellulose. “Our employees also play an important role in helping us maintain our commitment to be a good community partner, be a good steward of our resources, promote sustainable practices, and operate responsibly to earn our right to be here.”
