MEMPHIANS AND TOURISTS INVITED TO DEDICATE INDIVIDUAL LEDs ON THE MIGHTY LIGHTS

MEMPHIS—The Mighty Lights, a privately-funded dynamic LED installation on Big River Crossing launched in 2016 which has grown to showcase a $14 million display on the Hernando de Soto Bridge in October 2018, has extended an invitation to Memphians and tourists to dedicate a single LED on the Hernando de Soto bridge to an individual or group.

Those who wish to dedicate or gift a light this holiday season may visit mightylights.com to submit a $50 tax-deductible donation that offers a personalized message and photo, to be assigned a specific individual LED on a single Hernando de Soto Bridge cable.

The “jelly jar” LEDs along the perimeter of the Hernando de Soto’s arches will remain reserved in honor of the 1986 philanthropists who supported the original lighting display of the iconic bridge.

“Mighty Lights’ mission is to cultivate civic pride with brilliant light,” said Todd Richardson, president of the Mighty Lights board of directors. “Having the ability to dedicate a light that is yours permanently to a family member, a loved one, or even a pet can imbue this landmark with the lives and stories of individuals who make our city better.”

Dedications are permanent and may be viewed and shared from the Dedications tab of the Mighty Lights website. Each dedication will publicly display the message, photo, and exact cable and light location specifications. Dedications may be submitted by anyone, including Memphis visitors and out-of-market residents. Kevin Kane, President and CEO of Memphis Tourism, believes this will be a meaningful souvenir for those who visit the Home of Blues, Soul & Rock ‘n’ Roll.

“Between the activation efforts of the Memphis River Parks Partnership, Big River Crossing, and now the Mighty Lights, the Downtown riverfront has never been more energized, accessible and entertaining,” said Kane. “People come from all over the world to experience our music, BBQ and to see the mightiest of rivers. This unique program allows visitors who connect with our city to leave their own personal and permanent mark on Memphis.”

In addition to dedicating a light, requests for custom Mighty Lights colors may also be submitted through the website for a fee—$500 for nonprofits and $2000 for companies. While requests were free on Big River Crossing, a fee has been implemented as a result of high demand and the Mighty Lights’ expansion to both Big River Crossing and the Hernando de Soto bridges, which require additional design and implementation.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has already taken advantage of the new Mighty Lights capabilities on the Hernando de Soto Bridge by customizing the dynamic light show with St. Jude Marathon colors – red, blue, green, and purple – to display nightly during the St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend starting November 29 through race day on December 1.

As a nonprofit, Mighty Lights will use this revenue to support and maintain operation of the lights, which will continue to honor holidays and special moments for Memphis throughout the calendar year.
