Landmark and City Year Work Together for City Beautification Project

Landmark Training Development Company is heavily involved with volunteerism.  Their operation thrives as a result of an inflow of eager volunteers from all walks of life; business professionals who want to give back, retires seniors that appreciate what they do, college students who obtain credit as well as looking to be of good service.

This past week was no exception at Landmark with City Year coming in with a beautification project.  City Year did outstanding work refreshing the giant rainbow on the side of the building which houses their food pantry (open 5 days / week since 2011), and indoor farmers market (open year-round) at 2489 Carnes Ave. and creating two murals on the front and side of their Urban Outreach Center at 2411 Carnes Ave.  City Year has their artists on staff.  Do you know what happens when you put 2 artists together?  You get a pair of drawers!  And great drawers they are.  The designs created are both beautiful & appropriate.

Landmark has hosted college students at their gardening facility from across the United States and this year’s group was from Farmington State University in Massachusetts.  These beautiful people put a blitz type effect on, like no other.  A newly erected high-tunnel needed the crop beds converted from running north & south to east & west, and they did it.  Also, at the south perimeter existed a swale (ditch), which they filled in, leveled (graded like pros) & planted fruit trees.  But, that’s not all; Farmington State University students put their stamp of excellence on all three of Landmark’s gardens including the expansion of crop beds for various herbs, onions, sweet potatoes, & grapes.

Next, enter the New Ballet Ensemble who put on the finishing touches by preparing the soil, then planting wild flower seeds so the bees (which Landmark does bee-keeping also) can have an abundance of pollen & nectar to enjoy.

The proprietors of Landmark are quick to tell all comers that their operation is the result of many willing hands at work, and it is this type of synergy, which makes good things happen.

Organizations that wish to set-up tours for possible volunteer opportunities can feel free to contact Landmark.
