Hi-Speed Industrial Service and Conductix Conjointly Host Virtual Seminar on Overhead Crane Collision

As part of its ongoing virtual seminar series, Hi-Speed Industrial Service, in partnership with Conductix, recently hosted a virtual seminar on overhead crane collision presented by Chris Barksdale from Conductix. In this seminar, Chris focused on preventative measures and solutions for safe crane operations in businesses, specifically common collision avoidance solutions for overhead cranes and industrial machinery.
Collision Avoidance Systems (CAS) help to prevent collisions when utilizing cranes by detecting possible collisions and either slowing down or stopping the crane. Collision Avoidance Systems are important to protect both operators as well as equipment. Working to prevent collisions can maximize the safety of employees as well as the lifespan of valuable equipment. Chris emphasized that the vast majority of industrial machinery being used in a business could benefit from a Collision Avoidance System.

Chris noted three leading types of CAS systems that are most popular among industrial companies:
  • Laser Panel System: This is the most common type of Collision Avoidance System available today. On a laser panel system, laser sensors can be set to any distance up to 150 feet to detect and interrupt cranes, causing them to slow down and then stop so as to not abruptly cause any damage to the crane. What’s more, laser systems may be used either indoors or outdoors.
  • LED Panel System: This is the least costly Collision Avoidance System available. LED panels can detect collisions up to 50 feet away and are still effective, even with interruptions from third-party LED light sources. LED panel systems use a single-stage system that typically stops cranes immediately rather than slowing them down first. LED panel systems can only be used indoors.
*Chris noted that both of these systems are vibration tested by multiple companies and meet standards that hold up to overhead crane use. LED panels are easier to set up, although both systems are fairly easy to assemble and use.
  • Radar Based System: These systems can detect a possible collision from up to 150 feet away or more. These systems are better for applications that have dust, steam, fog or any outdoor effects. A radar based system can stop cranes at the onset of any unexpected movement passing in the way.
Chris then touched on collision avoidance with industrial machinery by showing a video in which attendees could see machinery that is automated with prevention and positioning systems. These systems give real-time data to the user to enhance safety. Throughout the seminar, Chris showed videos of each type of Collision Avoidance System with details and installation practices for each. All three of these Collision Avoidance Systems are virtually maintenance-free with the exception of wiping down the sensors frequently. Panels and sensors can be mounted nearly anywhere on machinery.

After the presentation, Chris held a live, interactive Q&A session with attendees.
