Girls Inc. of Memphis Announces 4th Annual Harvest Festival

Event to serve as kick-off for Saturday market through November

Girls Inc. of Memphis, a program that inspires young women in the community to be "strong, smart and bold,? today announced its 4th Annual Harvest Festival, will take place Saturday, November 3, at the Girls Inc. Youth Farm, located at 1179 Dellwood Avenue. The free event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will include food, games and activities such as a bounce house and photo booth.

Since 2015, the Girls Inc. Youth Farm has aimed to provide a welcoming and educational space, as well as a source of healthy food, to girls ages 15 to 18. Over the last three years, the farm has grown significantly both in acreage and pounds of food produced. Additionally, the number of girls involved with this program has increased from four to 20. This is the only girl-run youth farming initiative in the country.

The primary goal of the Girls Inc. Youth Farm is to have 80 percent of its produce distributed to the Frayser community. This is achieved through direct sales at the farm, participation in local events, a partnership with LifeLine to Success and field trips with local schools that involve teaching students about the farm-to-table concept.

This year?s Harvest Festival will serve as the kick off for the Girls Inc. of Memphis Saturday market, which will take place each Saturday through November from 9 a.m. to noon at the Youth Farm. The farm is also open for direct sales Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Girls Inc. of Memphis services girls in 43 zip codes within Shelby County, with a strategic focus in neighborhoods where girls with the greatest needs have easy access.

About Girls Inc.

Girls Inc. inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold through direct service and advocacy. Our comprehensive approach to whole girl development equips girls to navigate gender, economic, and social barriers and grow up healthy, educated, and independent. These positive outcomes are achieved through three core elements: people - trained staff and volunteers who build lasting, mentoring relationships; environment - girls-only, physically and emotionally safe, where there is a sisterhood of support, high expectations, and mutual respect; and programming - research-based, hands-on and minds-on, age-appropriate, meeting the needs of today?s girls. Informed by girls and their families, we also advocate for legislation and policies to increase opportunities for all girls. Join us at girlsincmemphis.org.
